Company Formation

In addition to supporting the creation of new spin-out and start-up companies to translate new discoveries and inventions arising from university research into commercial products/services, the University encourages entrepreneurship amongst students and staff - doing more than any university in the UK.

2010-11 - Another great year for company formation

In 2010-11, the University of Edinburgh supported the formation of another 35 new companies and businesses. For more information on these new enterprises, check out the University's Enterprise Network.

Significant Achievements

First Spin-Out Company

In 1967, the University of Edinburgh’s first recorded spin-out company, Reynolds Medical Ltd, was established to develop / manufacture ECG analysis equipment.

From Idea to IPO

To date, three University of Edinburgh spin-out companies have become public listed companies:

  • Vision Group PLC (1995)
  • Wolfson Microelectronics PLC (2003)
  • MicroEmissive Displays PLC (2004)
