Privacy Statement

Edinburgh Research and Innovation Limited (otherwise known as "ERI") is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of the University of Edinburgh, responsible for pre-award research support services, management of technology transfer activities, consultancy services, company formation, incubation facilities and management of the University science park.

ERI recognises the importance of protecting the privacy of anyone who visits the ERI website. This privacy statement sets out the policy of ERI towards the collection and use of information obtained from those visiting and using the ERI website. By using the ERI website you consent to the collection/retention of your personal information in accordance with this policy. Although the policy has been developed to take account of changes in internet technology, it is subject to change and any such changes will only be notified on this page.

General undertaking

ERI will:

  • Respect your privacy and confidentiality;
  • Only record your personal details in the manner and for the purposes set out in this privacy statement;
  • Keep your personal details secure from unauthorised access, use or disclosure; and
  • Not sell, rent, trade or otherwise knowingly share or provide your personal information to any third party except insofar as legally obliged to do so or as specified below.

What information is collected?

In order to use the ERI website, you are currently not required to register or provide any personal information about yourself. Any personal information collected from visitors to our website is on a purely voluntary basis, through the feedback or contact forms. However, by supplying this information, you are consenting to ERI (or the University of Edinburgh) keeping it for a reasonable period of time and using it for the purposes set out below.

In order to use most of the ERI website, you are currently not required to register or provide any personal information about yourself. However, if you wish to purchase a licence to use any of the University of Edinburgh’s technology, through our Click–Thru Licensing System, you will be required to register with us by providing some personal information (such as your name, organisation and contact details, such as postal address, telephone and e-mail address). Any personal information collected from visitors to other sections of our website (for example, through feedback or contact forms) is on a purely voluntary basis.

By supplying this information (whether through the registration process for our Click-Thru Licensing System or through the feedback or contact forms), you are consenting to ERI (or the University of Edinburgh) keeping it for a reasonable period of time and using it for the purposes set out below.

When you use the ERI website our web server automatically sends your computer with a small piece of code (a 'cookie') that enables the webpages to be displayed correctly and obtain standard information about your computer for logging web traffic. The information that the cookie provides allows us to manage and improve the services on the website - this cookie does not however contain any personally identifying information. When you view our webpages, as with most other websites, our web server builds logs of activity, which contain information about your location in the world and even your computer's IP address. In addition, on some pages, small visible graphics are used to build and enhance this logging system.

What we do with the information?

Any personal information that you provide to us will only be used for the purpose stated at the time we request it.

We will not sell, license or trade your personal information to others. We do not provide your personal information to direct marketing companies or other such organisations.

However, if you use our Click-Thru Licensing System and choose to purchase a licence using our electronic payment option, we may pass your personal information to a third party payment facilitator in order to facilitate your payment.

Personal information provided by you, and any other information relating to you, may be held by ERI and used for its own marketing purposes.

We may disclose your personal information to the University of Edinburgh or any other subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh, for the purposes disclosed in this privacy statement.

We regularly analyse demographic and other statistical information about user behaviour to analyse the popularity and effectiveness of our website. In performing such analysis and in the course of our business we will only ever disclose such information in an aggregated form that is not capable of identifying an individual user.

To comply with statutory requirements, we may sometimes be required to share your personal information with external agencies, particularly for the purposes of detection or prevention of crime or fraud.

Emails

Where you have provided your email address, ERI may occasionally send you, via email, information which ERI considers would be of use or interest to you. Such information may also include details of changes or updates to the services provided by ERI via this website or otherwise.

In any such email, ERI will provide instructions on how to discontinue this service if you would prefer not to receive any future information from ERI.
